U.S. Countertop Demand $42 Billion in 2024: Study

CLEVELAND — Demand for countertops in the United States is expected to rise 2.8% per year to 932 million ft² and a $42 billion value in 2024, according to a new research report from the Freedonia Group.

The Countertops study also picks quartz surfaces as the fastest-growing surface material in the next four years, and also notes that consumers will be taking a close look at porcelain slab and butcher block. (The study was researched and released before the major outbreak of Covid-19 in the United States.)

The report points out that market advances will be bolstered by rising residential kitchen and bathroom remodeling, when consumers tend to be most willing to splurge on higher in materials like granite to improve home value. Premium surfaces will also benefit from new construction, where single-family homes favor large kitchens and multiple bathrooms.

The study also notes that quartz surfaces will have the fastest growth of use in the market, even considering rising tariffs and silicosis concerns.

It also sees rising consumer interest in alternative surfaces such as porcelain slab and wooden butcher-block construction. Laminates will continue to lose market share, although manufacturers will expand and diversify product offerings.
