Interior Designer, Tim Green shares how historical patterns influence the style of interiors today.

Design has experienced a full-circle moment. Tim Green, an Atlanta based Interior Designer notes that “What was “old is now is new again.” Gone is the throw-away culture that has existed in design for years. We are seeing more interiors layered with a sense of history, life, antiquities and family heirlooms mixed with modern elements, not just the latest trends.

Historical patterns and antiques continue to make an indelible impact on the style evolution of interiors today. The focus is on interiors that will withstand the test of time rather than styles that will become obsolete within a few years.

Patterns of a bygone era have played a huge role in Interior Design. “It’s like in fashion. It’s constantly changing, however, most of the time something old is being reintroduced in a new more modern way. Design is really no different.” states Green.

From the places we socialize to the places we live in, almost every space we enter will feature patterns as part of its design. Whether it’s wallcoverings or a beautiful designer rug. Last year we interviewed Tim Green who offered some insight into how historical references have influenced the style of interiors today and tips on how you can incorporate them into your home.

So read on to find out more…

How do historical patterns influence the style of interiors today?

This question brings to mind the saying “Everything old is new again.“ It’s like in fashion. It’s constantly changing, however, most of the time something old is being reintroduced in a new more modern way. Design is really no different. Take a classic damask pattern for example. Damask has been around since the 14th century. You still see damask in today’s design world.  I love mixing a damask wallpaper or fabric into a modern or contemporary room.

Do you see a shift in design whereby historical patterns are seeing a resurgence?

Definitely.  If you look at some of the fabrics and wallpapers by Morris and Company and Sanderson you’ll see how they have taken some classic patterns like Chinoiserie, Botanicals, and Florals introduced them into the 21st Century.

What are some of the most inspiring historical periods in interior design?

I love the Roaring 20’s or Jazz Age as well as Mid Century Modern. In the Jazz Age, we see the beginning of the use of black, white and gold in combination with pastels like pink, purple and light yellow. The Art Deco style also came from this time. I think today’s design esthetic is most closely related to the Mid Century Modern style. Especially when you look at the animal prints, and exotic woods being used in today’s designs

What advice would you give someone when incorporating more classic patterns?

I would say try not to be so literal with patterns. The design should be fun and slightly whimsical. Go bold with a pattern and let it set the tone for a space.

Do you have a favorite project showcasing a favorite pattern or whereby you’ve incorporated Antiquités?

I had a client that lived in their home for over 40 years. They had an extensive collection of art and antiques. When they downsized into a high rise condominium we chose some of the best antiques and art to incorporate into their new home. As a backdrop I used an updated tone on tone gray and silver Stria patterned wallpaper from Anthology by Style Library. This gave everything an updated and sleek feel.

It’s often said it’s all about the mix are there any favorite design style pairings that you’ve used?

I love a mix of old and new, high and low. I recently paired an ultra-contemporary console with a classic gold leaf antique Louis Philippe mirror. The combination made the console look classic and the mirror sleek, refined and new again.
