A Farmhouse Industrial Style Home in the Hudson Valley

Leigh is the owner of this lovely home in Beacon, New York. But it wasn’t always so lovely—Leigh gutted the house, completely renovating it. The result is a wonderful mix of architectural elements, an earthy color palette and vintage finds.

My Style: Farmhouse-industrial with a mid-century modern touch

Inspiration: So much inspiration! I lived in Portland, Oregon, before moving to Beacon, where I was surrounded by a culture that was progressive, unique and creative. I found inspiration everywhere, from second hand and vintage shops to my friends’ beautifully curated apartments.

I found myself really appreciating how lovely and unique various styles can be when paired together: old + new, vintage + modern, farmhouse + industrial. I love mixing to create a look and feel that is my own.

The house, itself, also inspired me. The brick, its size, the location, its age… I never imagined taking on a project like this myself, but I didn’t think twice when I first laid eyes on her.

Favorite Element: I’d have to say the exposed brick. It adds so much dimension, contrast and texture. To me, it is art in itself and brings the old into the new, redone space.

I am also so happy with how the original wide plank pine floors upstairs came out with just some sanding and a layer of polyurethane. Keeping any original elements I could during renovation was really important to me.

Biggest Challenge: Editing pieces to fit in a small space while maintaining a clean, open feel. I enjoy rearranging often and shopping at flea markets and estate sales, but need to be extra thoughtful with any purchases so I don’t end up with a cluttered space!

What Friends Say: They love the open layout and cozy feel. One friend said it was the first renovation he saw that made a small space feel significantly larger.

Biggest Embarrassment: The house is a work in progress, but one thing I don’t like to point out is the exterior trim along the roof that is in really rough shape. I’m looking for a contractor who will be able to restore what is there or recreate the same style using new material.

Proudest DIY: Reusing original roofing boards found in the attic (circa late 1800s) for the coffee counter facing the living room, shelving in the bar closet and hooks under the stairs. Next up: headboard.

Biggest Indulgence: The ceiling fan in the master bedroom and the mahogany front door.

Best Advice: Make your space unique (and have fun and save money doing it!) Ask your friends, neighbors and nearby shop owners for local and unique sources. Frequent estate sales and flea markets. Travel to neighboring towns on your day off and shop second hand.
