Cornerstone Remodeling Reconstructs Old Cedar Deck with TimberTech's Capped Composite

When hail damaged a 23-year-old cedar deck that had started to show signs of aging, the Omaha, NE, homeowner knew it could be an opportunity to replace the failing structure with a more durable, low-maintenance deck. The cedar deck's wood railings had become soft and unstable.

The deck boards were beginning to sag. And, with the deck space located approximately eight feet off the ground and used regularly by the family for outdoor dining and entertaining, safety was of the utmost concern. Tired of the deterioration and upkeep of a wood deck, the homeowner finally decided to invest in TimberTech's capped composite decking which offers an added protective layer around each board.

Cornerstone Remodeling Inc., based in Omaha, first removed the old deck and then reconstructed the new deck on the same basic footprint. "TimberTech is very straightforward to install and good quality – we know what we'll get in terms of length, width and performance," says co-owner Aaron J. Shaul. "It goes in fast and provides a nice, clean look."

The new deck has also provided the family with peace of mind. According to the North American Deck and Rail Association (NADRA), decaying wood – particularly in decks the age of the homeowner's original cedar deck – poses a serious safety problem. The organization recommends regular inspections to make sure decks are installed correctly and well-maintained. It has designated May as "Deck Safety Month" to encourage people to consider what maintenance their decks need or if it's time for a total deck replacement.

Shaul guided the homeowner in choosing TimberTech's Legacy Collection in Mocha, an earthy walnut color with warm streaking effects. Hidden fasteners were used for a fastener-free surface and the deck was finished with RadianceRail® in Kona, a rich brown shade, and black metal balusters provided a striking contrast. TimberTech's post cap lights were added to extend outdoor enjoyment after dark.

"Together, the deck and rail combination looks very sharp and guarantees decades of enjoyment for the family," says Shaul. "Capped composites, like the Legacy Collection are a great investment, with the look of interior flooring taken to the outdoor deck ... and they have a 25-year stain and fade warranty."

Shaul noted the homeowner was thrilled with the new, low-maintenance outdoor living space. "Just as the crew was wrapping up, she was preparing to host a large party and show off her beautiful new deck!" added Shaul.
