Modern Farmhouse Vibes in a Historic Home in Pennsylvania

Taking on the restoration and remodel of a 1902 Victorian house while also raising two very young kids is a job for someone adventurous and with style. Thankfully, Christina has both for miles! The home she and her family have created is warm and modern (not to mention comfortable for all ages) but also has a timeless quality to it. And the historic architecture adds another beautiful layer to the home.

Favorite Element: The original hardwood floors—they were built in 1902 before there was any electricity. Every one of those boards was hand-cut, and it’s incredible to me that they’re still in great condition almost 115 years later.

Biggest Challenge: We have done the majority of the work ourselves, so it’s always hard to find the time and the money to do house projects (with a one year old and a two year old!). We work with what we have and have worked hard to keep the original integrity and character of the house.

What Friends Say: Our friends thought we were slightly crazy with taking on this project while we had a one year old and I was pregnant with my second child—but now they love it! They all love the high ceilings, tall windows, and character that just can’t be recreated anymore.

Biggest Embarrassment: Our bathroom upstairs—the only room that has yet to be renovated. It’s got green tiles with snowflakes on it, and even some remnants of green shag carpet under the vanity! Can’t WAIT to make this space over soon!

Proudest DIY: Definitely our kitchen. It was the worst room in the house before, and we transformed it into our favorite room in the whole house! We were able to add farmhouse style and have a beautiful and functional kitchen for our whole family (and we did about 90% of the work ourselves!)

Biggest Indulgence: Our copper sink! I wanted a farmhouse sink, and I fell in love with hammered copper sinks. It’s such a focal point in our kitchen, and I’m thrilled we chose to buy this piece.

Best Advice: Realize that buying a fixer upper isn’t for everyone. You have to have a passion for it, and there will be so many times you’ll want to give up. Take lots of “before” pictures so you can remind yourself just how far you’ve come when you feel like you want to quit.

Dream Sources: Antique stores & barn sales mixed with pieces from Restoration Hardware & Pottery Barn. Also, if I could have an unlimited budget to buy handmade pieces from women who make beautiful farmhouse décor, I’d be incredibly happy!
