Rubble Tile Client Project Spotlight: Brookwood Beauty by David Lund Design

It’s always an extra thrill to see finished installations using products that our clients selected at Rubble Tile. With “Brookwood Beauty”, David Lund Design solved some interesting design challenges, using tile in an artful yet functional way.

The challenge:

Remodeling a secluded, 1920’s European-styled cottage along Minnehaha Creek that needed some serious updates and architectural changes.

According to David Lund Design:

“What made the new house so attractive to was that so much of the house was right. A secluded urban lot, a great floor plan, multiple large bedrooms with lots of closet space, and plenty of bathrooms for this family of four (and a rotating collection of foster dogs).”

But like with many older homes there were two primary spaces that needed help right away – the kitchen and the master bathroom.

The Kitchen Tile

The outdated and dark-toned kitchen received a serious architectural updating. The cherry cabinets and black granite countertops needed a facelift to lighten things up.

For the backsplash, DLD went with AlysEdwards Half Baked, a collection of 1.25″ x 6″ porcelain bars that come mesh mounted on 11.5″x 13″ sheets. The white glaze, called Whipped Cream, was perfect to help brighten up the space. Meanwhile the inverse beveled design of these tiles created dimension, depth, and a clean, fresh perspective to the walls.

A Full-On Master Bath Remodel

A small, closet-sized space was the first challenge in reimagining their clients’ master bath.

The tile, the moldy shower and the fixtures had all seen better days. DLD totally gutted the bathroom, changed its location, and used space from a neighboring closet in laying out a new, gorgeous bathroom.

And the tile is the star of this space.

From the design team:

“This bathroom is also a master class in tile. A simple black and white tile palette is used in a variety of ways in combination with a range of tile profiles.
The odd thing with tile – the more you restrict your palette, the more creative you can get. It may be that we have to work harder, find new and unusual ways to generate interest, but in our experience, black and white tiles push our design sensibilities.”

For the shower floor, DLD chose Avanti black hex with black grout, a classic and yet modern look. These 2″ hexes are versatile; their traditional shape doesn’t limit their use in spaces with varying style. They look great in traditional, transitional, or contemporary homes.

Mosa Terra Tones grey planks worked well for the bathroom floor, laid in a herringbone pattern with grey grout. The juxtaposition of patterns, textures and Terra Tones’ beautiful glaze variation is unique and functional. The darker tones on the floor contrast perfectly with the white walls, while the innovative use of patterns generates wow factor.

The tiled shower nook features Avanti 1″ Hex, a striking use of contrast in color and pattern that’s also extremely useful and functional.
