Kristine Renee’s “Pink Palace” Oasis

After spending a couple of years working in Southeast Asia, relocating to Sacramento, CA was a big transition. Home has always been my most treasured oasis and I knew that in order to be content with my new geography, I must create a space that reflected me; my travels, stories, studies and adventures.

Young, single and working with a small budget, I spent countless hours searching Craigslist, touring not ideal apartments with one thing on my mind- I had my heart set on living in a historic space. Fed up with my online hunt and completing rental applications, I finally stumbled upon a one bedroom unit in the “Pink Palace” (or so my landlord calls it) in the heart of midtown, Sacramento.

I was attracted to the overwhelming natural light, hardwood floors and of course the Victorian charm. So what if it didn’t have laundry, parking, a/c, dishwasher…, the historic architecture makes up for it. My 1920s treehouse sits on the third floor, overlooking gigantic orange trees and a quaint backyard courtyard. The original porcelain kitchen sink, built-ins and subway tile totally melted my heart. A year later I have finally called the Pink Palace home.

I am inspired by my travels abroad and so naturally my style is very eclectic. I wanted to keep things neutral and organic while working with the natural bones of the space. I’m not afraid of mixing patterns, texture and materials. Walk through the parlor door into the main living space to find my sofa which is upholstered in a relaxed and comfy linen stripe with a Moroccan burlap wrapped coffee table in front, aviator desk chair and my prized fiddle leaf tree. The kilim is the only punch of color and oddly enough matches the exterior color of the building perfectly. With my background in Gender studies, framed nudes above the sofa are only fitting.

My bedroom holds one of my favorite pieces and my biggest splurge, the bed. I am a pattern queen, so the mix of loud floral and delicate lace bedding totally fits my vibe. Lots of light feeds my small cactus and a girl can never have too much closet space.

My dining room table is my drawing haven. You can find me in the morning with espresso in hand, french doors open and paper covering the table. Adjacent to the table is a secret walk in closet that I use as an art studio and gallery for my trinkets and local art.

I absolutely adore my home, and can talk about it all day long.
