Name: Hayley Francis
Location: Roosevelt — Seattle, Washington
Size: 1,800 square feet
Years lived in: 2.5 years, owned

When Hayley Francis set out in search of her dream home in Seattle during the summer of 2015, she did so toting a wishlist of charming must-haves: checkerboard black and white tile floors in the kitchen, hardwoods throughout, and a classic Craftsman style. And, in the midst of a rapidly rising and highly competitive housing market, she was lucky enough to land a house in Seattle’s desirable Roosevelt neighborhood that checked off all of the boxes on her list— and then some! She had effectively hit the first-time homeowner’s jackpot.

Editor’s note: This tour from last year deserves another look! Not just for that stunning vintage kitchen that might be my favorite of all time, but also for inspiration from all the ways Hayley was able to mix her own distinct style with the home’s architectural features.

As the Trend & Design manager at The Mine, an online home furnishing company, Hayley spends her days keeping an eye out for the next big thing in the vast world of interior design, and by night she moonlights as the creative director of Neon Doves, a fresh and wildly relatable fashion blog. Since purchasing her home, she has had the chance to channel her talents into the ultimate interior design project as she has worked to furnish every room with great care.

Having the opportunity to put into practice what she does for a living in her own personal space has been a cathartic journey for Hayley. She has worked to make the space a unique reflection of her own distinctly eclectic style, and has intentionally shied away from ascribing to one specific design aesthetic.

Hayley best describes her taste as a “mix and match” of different styles that appeal to her for different reasons. By allowing the design instincts that she has proudly inherited from her mother to take the lead, she has been able to pull inspiration for each room from her travels and her love of music and art history to build a home that she is proud of. And, at the end of the day, Hayley’s main goal has been to create a home that makes her guests feel warmth and happiness. It seems as though she has done just that.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: I love to mix and match different styles — the luscious bohemian look, Parisian chic, minimal…My goal isn’t necessarily to achieve a certain look or style, but instead make anyone that walks into my home feel warm and happy.

Inspiration: My mom had this innate sense of style in both interiors and fashion. She always told me to forget about sticking to one aesthetic, and instead buy what you like and trust that it will all work together. Her living room has a huge branch with a fake raven on it which sounds like the weirdest thing ever, but it was the perfect touch. She didn’t play by the rules, and it always worked.

Favorite Element: I love the character that comes with the house. It was built in 1922. Finding a Craftsman home with good, old bones was a non-negotiation for me. The classic black and white floors in the kitchen and the fireplace where I spend majority of my time in the winter are an added bonus that I’m so thankful for!

Biggest Challenge: The living and dining area share the same room, and I wanted them to feel like separate spaces. I moved the chandelier that was originally installed in the center of the room to hang over the dining table, and it did wonders!

What Friends Say: I recently had a friend tell me that my house is similar to my clothing style: crisp yet disheveled. You don’t necessary recognize that every piece has a place, but it most definitely does! Every element is planned out.

Biggest Embarrassment: The white paint in the master bedroom was my first attempt at painting. If you look closely, it’s super streaky. Despite the streaks I’m still proud of following through.

Proudest DIY: Though I have a few DIY projects throughout the house that I’m happy with, I feel like taking on the interior design of each room has been the ultimate DIY project for me. It has been a really humbling learning experience, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Biggest Indulgence: My Louis XV sofa in the living room. I’ve wanted this sofa for as long as I can remember, and I held out until I found the perfect one at an affordable price. This ended up being the focal piece to the living room and I planned everything else around it.

Best Advice: To those who have recently bought a home – you don’t need to do it all at once. Find the things you can’t live without, the right pieces of furniture are always worth waiting for. Your bank account will thank you, too!

Dream Sources: I work at The Mine as the Trend & Design Manager, a dream job that I’m so thankful for, and I’m lucky enough to be inspired by all the amazing pieces they carry, vintage and new. I’m also highly inspired by Seattle’s Pacific Galleries, Etsy where I’ve spent countless hours finding the perfect rugs at a reasonable price, eBay, and bumbling around vintage and flea markets.
