Italy is a treasure rove of mosaics. Although the Greeks were the first in the Mediterranean world to use them, the Romans took them to their heart. The three great eras of this art form were the Classical Roman period, the Byzantine period and the Renaissance. Each era brought something special to mosaics and each era brought that special quality to a world larger that the Italian peninsula and the islands of Sicily and Sardinia.

Over the years the building has retained a look that is both modern and classical while remaing very visually in the Jewish tradition.

The Magnificent Mosaics of Khirbat Al-Mafjar

During the first half of the eighth century CE, near the ancient city of Jericho, in what is now called the Palestinian Territories near Israel, magnificent mosaic floors were created for the audience hall and the baths (hammam) of a palace, now known as "Hisham's Palace." A total of 30 mosaic designs cover a space of about 30 meters square. These mosaic floors are unique in design and color, showing influences from Roman, Byzantine and Persian civilizations.

Hi all, Last spring I was contacted by Debbie Lewis from University Hospitals of Cleveland. Some time back, Debbie and I had worked on a ceramic tile mural at her daughter's elementary school. She invited me to create a glass tile mosaic for the new Horticultural Therapy Suite at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital, part of University Hospital of Cleveland.

Amish Star Quilt Pattern Tile End Table

Hi all, Over the years I've enjoyed adapting my hand made ceramic tiles for use in furniture. In Fall of 2014 I posted photos and a description of a coffee table with a tile top in a Navajo rug design. You can view it here. More recently I took a design from an Amish quilt pattern called The Amish Star for use in the top of an end table. I'm reminded that so many existing designs can be adapted for use in tile including the floor tile in an Oriental Rug motif as used in the Adamson House feature

The Adamson House: A Treasure of Spanish Influenced Ceramic Tile

Hi all, This summer I taught a hands-on course on theme of Spanish tile and mosaic for the School of Art at Chautauqua. While preparing for the Andalusian section of the course I was reminded that one of the best places to view this type of ceramic tile is the Adamson House on the Pacific Coast in Malibu California. But in 1930 and once the beach house of the prosperous Adamson family, it is now a historic landmark open to the public.
