His second deployment was in Afghanistan in 2010. Barron received the Purple Heart and combat action ribbon and was taken to the Naval Hospital in San Diego. On October 21, 2010, Barron was on a morning foot patrol. On the way back to the base, his engineer stepped on an IED, hitting him and Barron. Both left with amputations.

In 2011, he was deployed to Afghanistan where he participated in more than 50 combat missions with his bomb dog, Zenit. Armenta joined the Marines in 2007, graduating at the top of his class in Military Police School and receiving the Top Dog Award for his outstanding performance in the K-9 Handlers Course.
