Revisiting Boscobel's 19th-Century Charm

I was inspired to revisit Boscobel, a lovely early 19th-century house in Garrison, New York, overlooking the Hudson River, by recent article in the New York Times‘ T Magazine. It is a house I know well, not only for its amazing architecture and stunning views but also for its great collection of mostly 19th-century New York federal furniture.

The house was conceived by States Dykman, who made his fortune working for British quartermasters during the Revolutionary War. When he died in 1806, the house was merely a foundation and his industrious widow completed the project and lived there until her death in 1823.

Boscobel was seconds away from the wrecking ball in the 1950s when, with the financial help of Lila Acheson Wallace of Reader’s Digest fame, it was rescued. It was taken apart in pieces and moved 15 miles up-river to its current site and rebuilt with great care. I love the scale of the house with its large central entry, elegant wide stair and gracious rooms on either side of it. The windows have perfect proportions both for the scale of the architecture and to capture the natural light. The furnishings are the very height of sophisticated period style.

While not much was known about the original paint colors and wallpaper at the time of the restoration, science and technology have since led to new discoveries; some trim has been repainted and wallpaper added.

The second reason we visited the site was to see the small exhibit called “Hudson Hewn: New York Furniture Now,” which highlights the renaissance of Hudson Valley craftsmanship and its inspiration from the early 1900s. This most unusual display examines the past and present conversation of furniture made today, with design vocabulary employed by skilled 19th century cabinetmakers. It is demonstrated by the contrast of ornate and spare updates to more traditional styles. It is even more intriguing to spot the contemporary pieces carefully placed within the context of the period rooms.
