After graduating with a degree in architecture from the University of Tokyo, Kengo Kuma completed a two-year postgraduate program as a visiting scholar at Columbia University in New York, before returning to Tokyo to complete his Ph.D. Kengo Kuma was also made an Officier de L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France in 2009.

Local design studio Anne Rolland Architecte took on the ambitious task of converting a 17th-century horse stable into a small studio apartment in Paris, France. The former stables were associated with a townhouse in Paris dating back to the 1600s, and had been left vacant and abandoned for more than 70 years.
