By Megan Salzano Fashion holds vast influence across various home furnishings categories, and flooring is no exception. Ceramic tile, more specifically, takes its cue quite regularly from the evolutions within the fashion world. In fact, tile manufacturers can often be found partnering with fashion designers from across the globe in an effort to impart high style and design into their collections.
This year is unique in that it is experiencing a certain level of nostalgia within its fashion trends—brought on by the need for comfort, a consequence of coronavirus-related challenges. As such, fashion trends such as art deco florals and ’70s style geometric patterns are heavily influencing ceramic tile design.
Florals
“Whether the look is being described as Floral Riot, Tropical Chaos, Flower Power or Art Deco Design, we are seeing lots of vibrant floral prints showing up on fashion runways this year as a hot trend. Daltile’s Efflourescent [is an] art deco-type floral design.”
—Laura Grilli, lead product designer, Daltile
Marbling
“Fashion brands such as Maisie Wilen and Fendi have reinterpreted unexpected marble prints on dresses, tops and bottoms to create a bold look and to prove that this popular stone design goes far beyond kitchens and baths.”
—Suzanne Zurfluh, director of design and trend, Emser Tile
Geometrics
“Geometrics are trending up and are a play off of MOD prints and patterns we are seeing on the runway today.”
—Emily Holle, MSI
Comfort
“Whether it’s intricately patterned maxi dresses, your favorite pair of worn-in blue jeans or a colorful pair of yoga pants, fashion trends are shifting to comfort being the No. 1 concern. It’s no surprise that the same desire for relaxation and self-expression is turning up in the world of interior design.”
