Flotex Modular hits the ‘sweet spot’ for Forbo

HomeCommercialFlotex Modular hits the 'sweet spot' for Forbo

FlotexEvery flooring supplier desires that one product that is uniquely different, that truly stands out in a crowded market. Forbo Flooring Systems said it has such a product in Flotex Modular, a hybrid textile featuring a unique construction.

How it differs: Flotex Modular features a surface of densely packed nylon 6,6 fibers that provide a surface with durable wear characteristics and abrasion resistance. A waterproof adhesive is used, which bonds the flock to the backing, providing an impermeable layer to resist moisture (Flock adhesives are binding materials that are used to bind different substrates such as rubber, plastic and metals. Adhesive flocking is carried out by incorporating fiber particles electrostatically into adhesive layers.) A glass fiber net enhances tensile strength and tear resistance. There is a second layer of glass fiber—this double strength reinforcement provides greater dimensional stability and non-shrink/curl characteristics.

This unique construction makes Flotex Modular easier to clean, with no loops or twists to trap dirt. Most spills can easily be removed, including permanent marker. Made with up to 52% pre-consumer recycled content, Flotex Modular’s closed-cell cushion backing is 100% waterproof and is comfortable and quiet underfoot, Forbo said.

Flotex Modular provides the ideal blank canvas to create new patterns and colors to meet market demands while offering unique designs not typically found in traditional carpet. The end result is a highly durable, comfortable, hygienic textile floor with numerous design possibilities.

Digital printing

While Flotex is not a new product, it was recently enhanced by digital printing, according to Denny Darragh, president, Forbo Flooring Systems. “The digital printing could always be done with sheet goods and now we are able to do it with modular,” he explained. “It was a real break-through.”

Flotex Modular planks and tiles are digitally printed, cut and packaged in Hazleton, Pa., using materials sourced from Forbo’s factory in the United Kingdom. The Hazleton production facility features state-of-the-art printing capabilities with high-precision, photo- realistic results, allowing unlimited design flexibility and the ability to create custom floors quickly—in small or large quantities.

The versatile Flotex can be used in residential, commercial and Main Street applications, from senior care facilities to athletic locker rooms. “We have had massive traction with higher education as students go back to school [following COVID-19],” Darragh said. “Our internal teaching is all about HCT—hygienic, cleanability and durable. Those are the key elements where that matters in soft surface environments.”

Flotex Modular features 10 x 40 planks that allow customers to create striking interiors combining the comfort of carpet with the easy cleaning and durability of hard floors. “It’s a key product that has hit the sweet spot for us,” Darragh said. “We’re getting good customer acceptance and getting a lot of positive momentum going forward.”

Flooring retailers have raved about the product, with one referring to Flotex as “the perfect bridge” between hard surface and soft surface. “It combines the durability and cleanability of hard surface flooring with the warmth, comfort underfoot and quietness of carpet,” said Tim Short, president of JB Short Carpet One, Southern Pines, N.C. “Flotex is the perfect marriage between LVT/LVP and carpet. We have used it successfully in both residential and commercial applications.”
