We love tile crafts, and one of the easiest and most fun tile crafts out there involves making coasters out of tile. Whether you’re creating tile coasters as a gift for a holiday or to use in your own home, you can’t go wrong with this simple tile craft project.
Not sure where to start? Here are five ways to make tile coasters involving just a few materials a little creativity.
No-Fuss Patterned Tile Coasters
The easiest way to create tile coasters is to choose a patterned tile or a tile shape you like and attach felt or cork to the back of it. You can finish this project in five minutes or less.
This is a great option if you have leftover tile from a previous project that you don’t want to go to waste, but you can also purchase a few patterned tiles specifically to make coasters. The only downside is that these coasters may be too simple for avid DIYers.
Tissue Paper Tile Coasters
For a greater challenge, consider creating tissue paper tile coasters with white tiles and some of that gift tissue paper piling up in your closet. @rezynrebel’s video shows the simple steps of gluing the tissue paper to the tile, covering with more glue, and applying sealer and for full instructions you can read Unusually Lovely’s blog.
Note that you have the option of using just one piece of tissue paper or various tissue paper colors and designs to create a unique look.
Paper-Covered Tile Coasters
Don’t have any tissue paper? You can follow the same basic steps to create paper-covered tile coasters.
Rose Clearfield opted to create tile coasters with antiqued botanical sheet music, and you can follow her instructions to antique any paper you have lying around. Scrapbook paper and keepsakes such as your kids’ drawings are good options for paper-covered tiles, as well.
Picture Transfer Tile Coasters
You may have already guessed that if you can decorate tile coasters out of paper, you can create tile coasters using photos as well. This option is a great way to incorporate some of your most special memories into your home.
Before diving in, watch the beginning of the video above and read Hometalk’s full instructions, because there’s a twist: Rather than glue the photo onto the tile face-up, as you might expect, you glue it on face-down and then use water to rub off the paper. This technique gives the photos a slightly antiqued look.
Hand-Painted Tile Coasters
Another option is to create the tile coaster design yourself by painting it on! You have complete creative license in terms of what to paint and in which colors — just remember to seal your design once it’s dry!

Alcohol Ink Tile Coasters
Not a painter? Alcohol ink lets you experiment with different colors and designs without requiring the precision necessary for hand-painted tiles. Plus, every alcohol ink tile coaster is completely unique!
