Last year I brought you an entire week of cool tile introductions and brands you should know, and it proved popular with our readers (we’re preparing Tile Week 2012, which is coming up in April). I’ve decided to expand the idea to other products in the home; this week it’s all about lighting. First up, Bec Brittain. I found out about this Washington, D.C.-born designer after reading about her in several design magazines, and I’m duly impressed. After stints at an architecture firm and a hardware manufacturer, Brittain launched her eponymous product design studio in 2011. Her work has some interesting pieces, but the SHY Light is the one that impresses me most. Taking its name from the initials of the designer’s grandmother, the family of ceiling and floor fixtures uses thin LED tubes that you may configure in a variety of ways. In this case, the function is the form. Available finishes include brass and oil-rubbed bronze. Attractive they are, but pricey they are as well: Pieces range from $8,800 to $12,000.
