Tile of Spain, the international brand representing 125 tile manufacturers belonging to the Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturers Association (ASCER), recently exhibited their latest on-trend designs and collections at CERSAIE 2015 in Bologna, Italy, one of the most important international fairs in the ceramic tile industry. Minimalist and retro styles continue to be two of the biggest trends for next year, along with ceramic tiles inspired by wood tones.

These take the form of movement joints, commonly called expansion joints, which help eliminate stress in the tile when changes in conditions cause this expansion and contraction. The most common cause of movement is changes in temperature, but humidity, vibration, and changes in plane can all exacerbate the problem.

One of our most fun projects was making the many patterns of tile that Philippe Stark called for in his design for the SLS Vegas hotel pool area. The project consisted of 2 large ‘rug like’ areas of a patchwork of pattern with a solid color Black tile border around each. This was not our first Phillipe Stark project but it was the largest.

While traveling recently, I visited Amicalola Falls. Located in northern Georgia the Amicaloa Falls State Park and Lodge is a beautiful place, after spending time there it is easy to understand why it is one of Georgia’s most popular state parks. In addition to its spectacular scenery the park is filled with beautiful hiking trails, a campground a wonderful lodge and the breathtakingly beautiful waterfalls.

communedesign : It comes as no surprise that the annual Employee Pumpkin Contest at Heath Ceramics—12 years running—is a treat for the eyes. Employees are given the opportunity to appropriate traditional Heath shapes in their more malleable, leather-hard stage to create Halloween-themed sculptures. The “pumpkins” were judged in three categories: best craftsmanship, best concept and best use of Heath clay.

I’m a huge fan of aging in place design, as many of you know, which is why I usually specify comfort-height toilets for my bath projects. I have always purchased them for my own homes, too. When specifying wall-hung toilets, I suggest a height that makes it easiest for a client to sit and rise easily, which usually means on the higher side. Now, it turns out, I may not have been doing any of us a favor!

Growing up, Jay Hewitt had a treehouse that was little more than a large piece of plywood. Fond memories of his playtime up high and a desire for his grandchildren to experience the same joy led him to create a treehouse they could also enjoy. Being trained as a professional carpenter, however, led to a much bigger end product. This three-story treehouse in Attleboro, Mass., is more than 40 feet tall.

Sometimes we find ourselves dreaming of a lake house where we can relax with the family. This unusual version, characterized by a dark facade, was designed by architect David Salmela as a place to both gather and escape. What used to be the family’s campsite on Lake Superior in Wisconsin is now a fascinating family retreat. The interiors of the 1,280-square-foot main house are dressed in clear basswood, reflecting warmth and evoking closeness to nature.

When we think of a sauna, the first image that probably comes to mind is a rectangular, wooden room with high and low bench seating. However, Canadian architecture firm Partisans has created something entirely different than the dark and boxy norm. On a private island north of Toronto, the firm created a sauna that mimics the look of a grotto. This sea-cave-inspired design called for wood paneling with fluid curves to line the inside, and a bay window that looks out to the blue lake.
