A Tile Tale Inspired by Life and Process: Meet Guy Mitchell

Kitchens for Living

Handmade products are one of the easiest ways to create an artful kitchen. In fact there was a whole turn of the century style devoted to that concept. The Arts and Crafts movement (1880-1910) was a reaction to the industrial age of machinery and mass production. Proponents felt that items crafted by human hands were imbued with a soulfulness that was lacking in factory produced goods.

Large Format Tile Requires Specialized Mortars

CUSTOM Insights Blog

Today’s tile is larger than ever. For ceramic or porcelain tile greater than 15” (38 cm) on one or more sides and for all natural stone, the new industry standard calls for the use of a specialized mortar. These modified dry-set mortars (large format tile mortars) are specifically formulated for large and heavy tile. They resist slumping to support the increased weight, promoting smoother tile installations with reduced lippage or unevenness between tiles.

Kitchen Work Centers, the New “Triangle”

Kitchens for Living

Whether you are a design professional or an educated homeowner you’ve probably heard the term “kitchen work triangle”. In fact it’s probably one of the first things you learn when endeavoring to create a new kitchen. Who thought this up? It is actually the result of a study made at the University of Illinois in the 1950s! If you’re wondering if it could be outdated, just think of how much kitchens have changed since then in terms of products, appliances and how we use them.

Kitchen Design Contest – The Judging Process

One of the projects that I have been associated with for the last year is the Sub-Zero and Wolf Kitchen Design Contest. Held every other year, it attracts incredibly talented judges and participants, and as far as contests go, it is one of the handful where I greatly anticipate the outcome. Since a large percentage of the projects I work on are residential, I feel particularly qualified to tell you that there isn’t much debate that the kitchen is the most important room in the house.
