TEXTURE BY DESIGN

CTDA's Tiledealer Blog

'By Sean Cilona, Marketing Director, Florida Tile. Texture describes the visual and/or tactile nature of something. Texture has two components: “image texture” (the look of something) and “physical texture” (the feel of something). To designers, architects, builders and decorators, texture is important because it reflects the nuances of personal style, establishes environmental interest and engenders specific moods such as warm or cool and settings from formal to casual.

Get Inspired: What’s Happening on Share Designs in July

Granada Tile

'It may be summer—time for vacations, barbecues, the beach and general relaxing, but, if the activity on Granada Tile ‘s Share Designs page this month is any indication, people are still thinking about cement tile (they’re people after our own hearts, incidentally). Maybe they’re planning a new concrete floor tile installation. Maybe it’s cement tiles for small bathroom.

Color: Blue

The Perfect Bath

'Blue is not a color I think of often. The only shade of it I wear is navy and I never use it in decorating. Recently, however, I have seen some inspirational blues in powder baths, delicious dark and slightly mysterious shades in dining rooms and as accents in other spaces. My new interest in blue started during a recent visit to one of my favorite shops in London, Egg.

'As with a mandala, contemplating the rippled pattern of the Scribe mosaic can lull away the stresses of the day. [Well, it works for me!] Cut by water jet, the stone tiles are suitable for floor and wall surfaces; a slight texture gives them a degree of slip resistance. Here, I''m impressed by the contrasting grout treatment: white between the central carrara tesserae and grey separating the surrounding pieces of thassos marble. annsacks.com.

Installing Laminam 5.6

Kate-Lo Tile & Stone

'This is a sneak peek to a new product offering by Crossville. Laminam 5.6 is rolling out to market this fall and is durable enough to be installed on floors. What the big deal, you might ask? Laminam are very large porcelain panels that require less grout less. Super contemporary, really amazing. Rick Hagen, our sales manager, is training in Crossville to learn how to install this new material.

Quaint It Ain't

'To the relief of the gingham-averse [I count myself among that lot], there''s ample stylistic latitude within the country genre of design. Thanks to an un-cutesy use of color and form, this bath is both easy-going and aesthetically pleasing. Even the quilt-inspired floor treatment gets a pass from me; it puts me in mind of a Robert Indiana work, ''USA 666''. bestorarchitecture.com.

Orsoni Gold Smalti: From Cartellina to Incorporation

Margaret Almon Mosaics

'Orsoni Gold smalti in orange. Photo by Margaret Almon. The cartellina is a veil of blown glass which protects the gold leaf laid on a glass chunk, making a delicate sandwich. The cartellina, overlaying each of these pieces from the Orsoni Foundry , is variegated from yellow to red orange, like flame. Incorporate is the first word that comes to me when I contemplate using gold smalti in my work: unite into one body.

Getaway Days

KB Culture

'At the height of summer, the pace of life slows. Languorous weekends—occasionally annexing Monday and Friday—are the rule. Whether you call them the dog days or the doldrums, this stretch of the season can seem oddly unbound by time; protracted periods of relaxation can subtly turn into a benign sort of boredom. It''s kind of like watching the washing machine, much as this loyal hound was doing in 1954.

More Than Monochrome

KB Culture

'Mixing cool and warm tones—I count five of them—keeps the visual boredom of the all-white kitchen at bay while preserving the essential color palette. Subtle shading isn''t the only design tactic that gives this space character, though. There''s some unorthodox geometry at work, too. The range hood has a curious shed-roof-like look to it, and the sink pops right out of the cabinet frontage. dica.es.
