HomeFeatured PostRetailers React: What do you look for when hiring new employees?

hiringEvery two weeks, FCNews seeks out flooring retailers across the country to offer their advice on hot topics of the day. This week we asked: What do you look for when hiring new employees?

Here are their responses:

“When hiring, we look for personable, high-energy, friendly people. While we like to have people with prior floor covering experience, we will also look at candidates that have had other sales experience, worked in the hospitality industry and/or have had a career in which they had to continually interact with others.”

—Eric Langan, Carpetland USA, Davenport, Iowa

“I look for people with a likable personality, ability to work as a team member and is capable of learning the job we are looking to fill. In interviewing an experienced individual for sales, the line of questioning becomes more extensive.”

—Bill Zeigler, Charles F. Zeigler & Sons, Hanover, Pa.

“Hiring is difficult. The right people make all the difference in the world. When interviewing, I look for likability and try to gauge their ability to instill trust and confidence. Cultural fit is a must. After that, we look for specific experience or ability to execute the role they’re interviewing for.”

—Adam Joss, The Vertical Connection Carpet One, Columbia, Md.

In hiring candidates, we look for some simple answers to a few questions. Are they easy to engage? Are they easy to talk to? Do they listen? Most people with these attributes are coachable and capable customer service candidates.”

—Rick Oderio, Conklin Bros., San Jose, Calif.

I look for driven individuals who focus on outcomes instead
of obstacles on the way to reach those outcomes.”

—Kyal Wilson, Nampa Floors & Interiors, Nampa, Idaho
