In 2017, working alongside ceramic designer Sándor Sinko, the inhabitants of central Maastricht embarked on a truly local project to cover the grey environment around Radium with colourful mosaics.
The project aimed to bring people of all ages, races and religions together in a shared goal. Participants were able create their own small piece of work to be incorporated into the permanent flowing mosaic artwork providing a colourful new skin for the project’s outdoor terrace.
This inspiring mosaic project is typical of the ethos at Kunstfront. Located just off the city centre at Cabergerweg 45, this is an influential studio building, where everyone can express themselves creatively. There is even a workshop café where individuals can really experience the group dynamic, as well as participate in themed workshops taught and organised by Sándor Sinko. Here inclusivity is the watchword, with everyone – groups, students, companies, singles, and people with disabilities – all welcome to take part. One of Tile Addict’s own even spent some hours here cleaning grout from the tiles.
The Radium is located in the corner of Noorderbrugtracé and Cabergerweg. The area borders the Frontenpark and is characterized by buildings that speak eloquently of the area’s industrial past, such as the old Cokesfabriek turned monument, the impressive Radium chimney, the Kunstfront itself, and the Gashouder.
It is an area that lends itself to creative and cultural activity; a flexible space for experimentation. It’s on-going development is in line with the established ambitions of the iconic Sphinx quarter which is undergoing complete re-development and re-purposing.
