Study: Quartz-Surface Annual Growth of 4.5%
CLEVELAND – Quartz surfaces, aka engineered stone, will be the fastest-growing sector of the U.S. countertop industry through 2022, according to a new research study.
Countertops Market in the U.S., 5th Edition, from Cleveland-based analysts The Freedonia Group, estimates that quartz-surface/engineered-stone countertop demand will reach 152 million ft² during 2022 after an annual growth rate of 4.5% beginning this year.
Freedonia proposed that demand for quartz-surface/engineered-stone countertops grew 28% per year from 2012-2017, almost entirely due to significant sales advances in the residential market because of greater availability and the search for alternatives to granite.
The study also advances that, during the past five years, demand for quartz surfaces/engineered stone surpassed that of granite, which was formerly regarded as the primary material in the luxury residential market.
The study sees health gains for quartz-surfaces/engineered-stone until 2022, driven by:
- its aesthetic properties and superior durability compared to laminates;
- advantages relative to natural stone such as color uniformity and a smoother, nonporous surface that is resistant to biological contaminants;
- continued market penetration in both the residential and commercial markets;
- larger distribution networks and a presence in big-box home-supply centers and IKEA further promoting awareness and greater visibility among consumers.
U.S. demand for all types of countertops in the US is forecast to rise by slightly more than 2% annually through 2022 to 803 million ft². Residential remodeling activity will rise as homeowners continue to opt for larger kitchens and multiple bathrooms, expanding the space devoted to countertops. Increasing construction activity in the countertop-intensive office, retail, lodging, and institutional markets will also drive growth.
Countertops Market in the US, 5th Edition (published 2/2018, 186 pages) is available for $5,600 from The Freedonia Group.
