Escape to the Irish Countryside With This Rustic and Modern Cabin

Aiming to escape your responsibilities by “getting lost” in the wilderness? Well, you might as well do it in style. This charming “Lost Cottage“, located in the lush hills of southwestern Ireland, is the perfect place to wander aimlessly and take in your surroundings for a bit. Beginning in the ’60s, Lost Cottage spent 40 years unoccupied before undergoing the extensive restoration that’s transformed it into an inviting getaway that seamlessly blends in with its natural surroundings. Originally constructed as a farmer’s bolthole in the 19th century, the quaint cottage served as an unofficial gathering spot for goats until owner Brian Spain stepped in and set out to make the place fit for non-bleating occupants (read: humans).

With the help of conservation experts, Spain restored portions of the home’s original features, which included repairing the roof and recreating the window frames. Textured walls and a completely redone mud floor enhance the home’s earthy feel.

“The authenticity of the renovation was very important,” Spain told The Spaces. “We took the rotting frames that were in the windows and copied them exactly.”

Architect Maxime Laroussi also took part in the project, contributing the home’s standout modern feature: a new wing made of wood grain concrete.

The cottage is equipped with a full living room, dining room, kitchen – complete with wood-burning stove, a master suite with an en suite rainfall shower, a second bedroom and a skylight that hovers over a sunken bath. An outhouse contains a washer and a dryer. The home can comfortably accommodate four guests.
