New York City has always been at the forefront of style, so it’s typical that the kitchens in the city are beautiful, sophisticated and unconventional. Here are some of our favorite kitchens from our New York City tours—the ones that make great design look effortless and unique solutions seem feasible.
Amelia’s New York rental kitchen is small, but functional in so many ways. The kitchen cart provides her with a surface where she can serve a home-cooked meal or small bites when entertaining. She also personalized the backsplash with removable wallpaper. Finally, she utilized the small space above the kitchen cabinets for extra storage. Her apartment is just under 500 square feet, so everything counts.
Megan and David have a personal elevator that leads to their Brooklyn apartment, but even that doesn’t beat the big windows in the kitchen, which fill the room with sunlight. Their kitchen is clean, simple and cozy, but its brightness surely makes sipping a cup of coffee a joy every morning.
Open kitchen shelving tends to be a somewhat controversial topic: people either love it or hate it. Whatever your opinion, we think Monica’s West Village rental kitchen illustrates open shelving done right. The kitchen is small, but the white walls and housewares paired with the neutral colored cabinets keep it harmonious and simple.
Emily’s kitchen is personal, beautiful, and functional. We love the exposed brick wall and the art by her grandfather. She added a high top table at the end of the kitchen counter, providing her with more surface area to entertain guests. She does this all in just 280 square feet.
Bethany is an interior designer, so it makes sense that she chose to forego bold-colored kitchen walls in her Brooklyn rental. Dark, bright colors can easily overwhelm a small space, so leaving the walls white in a space that gets minimal natural light makes it feel a bit more airy. We also love the pop of the wood furniture and fresh flowers against the blue accent wall that frames the kitchen.
It’s clear that Simone has an eye for design (she has her own swimwear line, after all). She successfully executes a unique color palette of red and gray throughout her Williamsburg apartment, which isn’t easy. The gray adds a soothing effect and sophistication to each room, and the red keeps it exciting and playful—the perfect balance
The kitchen in Peti’s 800 square foot apartment is perfect for entertaining. The pass-through window makes it easier to have a conversation as she prepares a cup of tea for her guests, and the charcoal paint gives off a glam and romantic vibe. Not one to shy away from bold art, she hung colorful prints and vintage flyers she loves—art that reminds her of her friends, family and travels.
The bold colors and modern, luxe vibes in Gretchen’s Tribeca apartment are worth a peep, but really, it’s the view that makes this New York kitchen stand out. Just gorgeous.
