IIDA NC Declares Winners of 2016 Honor Awards

The International Interior Design Association of Northern California (IIDA NC) has announced its 2016 Honor Award winners. Launched in 2004, the annual IIDA Northern California Honor Awards celebrates the diverse industry of Interior Design and state-of-the-art projects from across Northern California.

Respected as a renowned industry award, the competition is open to designers and firms of all sizes, focuses, and areas of interests. This year, a total of 95 projects were submitted across all categories with a total of 18 award winners from firms including Aidlin Darling Design, Gensler, HOK, Studio O+A and more.

"Now in its 12th year, the Honor Awards is one of the most anticipated award events amongst the region's design community," said Fae Urban, President of the IIDA Northern California. "Every year, we are amazed by the number of projects submitted and the caliber of work coming from Northern California's top talent. One of our goals is to inspire the future designers of tomorrow and there is no doubt this event inspires us all to create our best work when designing the spaces where we live, work, and play."

The 2016 Award categories and winners are as follows:

  • LIVE: Anyplace We Call Home
    • Honor: Mill Valley Courtyard Residence by Aidlin Darling Design
    • Merit: Skyhaus by Aidlin Darling Design
  • WORK: Corporate Workplace Environments
    • Work Small: projects under 20,000 useable sq. ft.
      • Honor: Muh-tay-zik Hof-fer by Gensler
      • Merit: Redpoint Ventures by IwamotoScott Architecture
    • Work Medium:  projects over 20,000 useable sq. ft. and under 75,000 useable sq. ft.
      • Honor: WIRED Magazine Editorial Offices by Gensler
      • Merit: Bloomberg SF Tech Hub by IwamotoScott Architecture
    • Work Large: projects over 75,000 useable sq. ft.
      • Honor: Paris Meets Bladerunner by Studio O+A
      • Honor: Twitter One 10th Headquarters by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson
  • PLAY: Where We Entertain Ourselves (Hotels, Restaurants, Theaters, Spas, Casinos, Stores, Showrooms, Malls, Tasting Rooms, Sports Arenas)
    • Honor: Coffee Bar Kearny by jones | haydu
    • Merit: Neon Pigeon by EDG Interior Architecture + Design
  • SERVE: Where We Meet
    • Honor: HanaHaus by Gensler
    • Merit: LAX Joint Business Class Lounge by Woods Bagot
  • HEAL: Where We Flourish
    • Honor: Chu Hall by SmithGroupJJR
    • Merit: Oregon State Hospital, Junction City by HOK
  • GIVE: Social Responsibility (Any project with an emphasis on improving the physical space's impact on society. Sustainability, Occupant Well-being, Historic Renovation, Improved Project Process, Pro-bono)
    • Thoughtworks San Francisco by FENNIE + MEHL Architects
  • AGAINST THE ODDS AWARD: One project in any category chosen by the jury that exemplifies award winning design despite budgets, schedule or other extraordinary challenges or constraints.
    • Coffee Bar Kearny by jones | haydu
  • PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD
    • Thoughtworks San Francisco by FENNIE + MEHL Architects
  • WOW! BEST OF SHOW AWARD: One project chosen by the jury to exemplify the best overall design of the entries.
    • Muh-tay-zik Hof-fer by Gensler

Committed to encouraging education within the student design community, the event also recognizes top talent from the Bay Area's leading design schools including California College of the Arts and San Jose State University. During the event, up to $12,000 was awarded to projects of design students.

The winning projects were judged for suitability to the project challenge, originality of the design solution, and the successful integration of interior forms, finishes and furnishings. The 2016 jury included esteemed Julie Gauthier, Lauck Group in Houston; Will Meyer, Meyer Davis in New York; Diana Pisone, Ted Moudis in Chicago; Pablo Quintana, VOA of Washington DC; and Alissa Wehmueller, Helix of Kansas City.
