University of South Carolina Selects Mondo's Super X720 Track Surface for its Outdoor and Indoor Track Facility

Mondo, the global leader in the track and field, indoor sport and contract flooring markets, today announced that University of South Carolina has chosen its Super X 720 track surface for its outdoor stadium and for its new indoor track facility, marking another school in the Southeastern Conference to have Mondo for its outdoor and indoor tracks.

Mondo's track surfaces

"Mondo has a long history of being consistently fast for both indoor and outdoor tracks, no matter what facility or part of the world you're in," said Curtis Frye, South Carolina head track and field and cross country coach. "Our athletes are always excited to compete on a Mondo surface because it provides solid, consistent performances wherever they are."

The new nine-lane, 400-meter outdoor Super X 720 track, which will be known as the Weems Baskin Track, is being installed as part of a major renovation to the Sheila and Morris Cregger Track Stadium. All the track areas in the venue, including the straightaways and the long jump and pole vault lanes, also will have the Super X 720 surface. Construction of the track will begin in October.

A six-lane, 200-meter Mondo track with two curved sections that are banked for high-speed running events will be going into the new indoor facility at the SEC school. Banking allows athletes to safely maximize their speed and performance on the curves instead of decelerating, which they must do on flat surfaces. Construction of this track is slated for the spring of 2016.

"Another reason I like Mondo is because it gives every athlete—not just elite athletes—the chance to perform their best," said Frye. "Mondo produces the world's best performances for all athletes, and has for a long period of time."

Other Mondo surfaces also will be installed in the NCAA Division I university's soccer weight room. Medallion Athletics Products, Inc., a general contractor and a Mondo dealer based in Mooresville, North Carolina, will install the Mondo surfaces.

The Gamecock track program Frye established is regarded as one of the nation's elite. In the 20 years that he has served as head track and field and cross country coach, he has coached or overseen over 60 NCAA champions, 116 SEC champions,14 Academic All-Americans and more than 450 NCAA All-Americans.

Mondo's Super X 720 track surface combines the backing of Mondotrack and the wear layer of the company's Super X Performance track which are vulcanized together to form one continuous, seamless piece of material that delivers exceptional traction, durability, drainage and safety. The backing provides exceptional shock absorbency and energy return, which further helps the performance layer increase athletes' comfort and enables them to achieve faster times than when running on other surfaces. Other venues in the U.S. with the Super X 720 surface include Drake Stadium at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Hornet Stadium at Sacramento State (California), which hosted the 2014 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, John McDonnell Field at University of Arkansas (Fayetteville) and the Vanderbilt Student Rec Center at Vanderbilt University (Nashville, Tennessee).
