But wh en Dabney Tompkins and Alan Colley designed their dream home, they created something that would literally top all the rest. The main floor consists of a basic kitchen and two beds on either side, while the upstairs is a master suite. The couple created a shower on their deck and installed a spring-fed hot tub.

The entire rear elevation is floor-to-ceiling glass – very expansive views were always an important consideration in the design of the house. The backyard has quite a few really nice trees that all that floor-to-ceiling glass will be able to look upon. Moving around the rear yard looking back towards the house.

I’m starting to lose count of how playhouses I’ve designed over the last 6 years … I think it’s around 8 or 9, which might not sound like a lot to you but it certainly seems like a lot to me. That’s why you don’t see me designing themed playhouses (like a “rocket ship”) Proof of Life.

When we finally added all those 2D drawings into one 3D model, there were so many pot-holes that it was clear this set was meant for field design. And when you’re fighting for inches in your renovation design, you really need an existing wall to be where it is drawn (especially if that wall is 1,700 miles from the office).

We have been working on closing out the “shell” building (just the exterior walls and roof) portion of the project and really getting into the interesting bits of design. Another project that we are working on is the renovation and refurbishment of a 1980’s era speculation built office building in Dallas.

It isn’t an issue now, but it could be in the future so this has been a consideration since the earliest design schemes were presented. The black locust deck finally has the wood skirt installed at the base, as well as the wood rail cap (to keep you from getting a free tattoo on a hot Texas Summer’s day.)

This turned out to be a lot more challenging than I had anticipated but I am happy to say that the Life of an Architect Playhouse Design Competition Awards are finally complete! If you consider yourself a designer, you should design everything. Since then, a lot of changes have occurred.

We delved into the interior design, looking for features such as hardwood flooring, stainless steel appliances, balconies and other modern features. Residents can take in panoramic views from the 30th-floor skydeck, or enjoy a resort-style pool and 24-hour gym. Kitchens have maple cabinetry and granite countertops.
