In all the bathroom showers I have torn out and rebuilt, Slate has been the worst performing material followed closely by Travertine, then Marble of any type. We have to seal it, before grouting to keep the grout from changing the color of the Slate and getting stuck in the rough texture. It takes more work to grout.

There are a number of Natural Stone products you see installed in shower design centers all over made from Marble, Travertine and yes, Slate. Can't do that with Porcelain or standard Ceramic Tile. Remove all the old grout, re-grout and reseal after cleaning the surface. I actually like Natural Stone for the workability.
