Saltillo tiles are shaped either by pressing quarried clay with a wooden frame, or by carving out the desired shape. Lastly, Saltillo is not recommended for outdoor installation in freeze-thaw climates, although it is a popular choice in warmer climates, such as the American Southwest and Mediterranean countries.

The ecologically designed cabana was built by Arkin and Tilt Architects based in Berkeley, California. An expansive outdoor terrace is fully equipped with bath, changing room and an outdoor shower. Double-sided pise walls are complete with earth-cement finish, locally quarried.
