Macy’s executive training program in New York and left after two years to go to work for his father-in-law, and eventual business partner, Tom Carmichael of Stitt and Howell, a major floor covering distributor. In the mid-1950s, Spirer accompanied Carmichael on his regular trips to the carpet manufacturers in Dalton.
