As was the architecture of Eliel Saarinen, the paintings of Akseli Gallen-Kallela, the political leadership of Marshall Mannerheim and perhaps most important the compiling of the Kalevala, the epic oral saga of Finland by Elias Lönnrot, published in 1849. The music of Sibelius was also identified with that movement.
