Last week I attended the awards celebration of New England Chapter Institute of Classical Architecture and Art held at the State House in Boston, a fabulous Charles Bulfinch building built in 1798 with later additions. It is an architectural treasure and I urge you to take time to visit the next time you are in Boston.

This 3,000 square foot home in Sheffield, Massachusetts was designed for a couple who wished to retire in the countryside. The screened porch is enjoyable year round, thanks to a large field stone fireplace and wall panels that can be glass or screened, depending on the season. The house is level, making mobility much easier.

The 2014 tour took place in Georgia, USA - a state rich in both historic and modern day stone activity. The attendees, which included stone professionals from fifteen states, also represented a wide cross section of the industry. The primary use of the stone extracted at Keystone is for the monument industry.

These tapestries added colour to the room as well as providing an insulating layer between the stone walls and the room, thus retaining heat in the room. One of this famous so called Papier paints wall paper is still in situ in Ham House, Peabody Massachusetts.
