Ceramic tiles first made an appearance in the ninth or tenth century BC, with cement tile arriving quite a bit later in the 1800s when hydraulic presses were invented and Portland cement was discovered. Zellige tiles are very traditional to this region and are made up of colorful mosaics. Moroccan Tile. Spanish Tile. Cuban Tile.

Another classic Victorian tile was the mosaic floor tile, which boasted a wide array of rich colors and intricate patterns, like Fleur-de-lis type scrolls, flowers, birds, and literature characters. Victorian tiles have been called many other names, including Cuban tiles, Hydraulic tiles, Encaustic tiles, and Cement tiles.

5) This client had updated his fireplace about a year before I got there with some Carrera marble tiles, but the fireplace with those warm walls felt so "cold". I've recently had installed a magnificent Black Marble Fireplace and am in the process of looking at surrounds and mantels and thinking about the finishings and decor!
