This phase of the work is widely referred to as “Schematic Design” Although some people also have an earlier phase called “Programming”, I tend to consider that as part of the schematic design phase as well, rather than separate it out into its own special section. It was way better.

This is a workspace currently under construction in one of my Dallas projects. The room is designed for one person to use and is 17′ long and 6′ wide. I am not a fan of counter supports that go down to the floor – who is?!? Yes, I got down on the floor for you in order to get this picture.

I have taken apart cabinets so they could be sanded, filled holes, chips and gouges, painted millwork, and installed new cabinet hardware. The next morning the floor in the bar was so sticky I thought a clown had exploded back there. You know the old adage that if you have a party, everyone ends up in the kitchen?
