The calcium carbonate in these bins will first be weighed, and then mixed to form the color layer of cement tile. The color layer of handmade cement tiles is about 1/8" thick. One can use portland cement based mortars to eliminate the plaster, but then the cure time is extended and ductile stainless wire must be substituted for copper due to the galvanic reaction potential between copper and mortar. And there are major concerns over the moisture resistance, or lack thereof, of plaster.
