This week on my trip to Atlanta I met designer Smith Hanes. The space is fabulous; open, modern, relaxed with an industrial and vintage twist. Most recently he designed the new restaurant 246, also in Atlanta. He used Waterworks Grove Brickworks in this space and the application is great.

In his new book, AERO Beginning to Now , Thomas O’Brien featured two baths that have captured not only his brand of “warm modernism” but my sensibility as well. He repeated the nickel on the framework on the gigantic medicine cabinets and on the frames for the vanity doors.This is modern-era simplicity at its best.

In 1999, Waterworks participated in the Kips Bay show house with Thomas O’Brien, which coincided with the launch of the highly original and extremely beautiful Aero fittings. Looking through O’Brien’s new book, Aero: Beginning to Now , I am reminded of this earlier work and his influence in the design community.

Though they’re used in the bath today, exposed thermostatic shower systems were originally designed for factories where precise temperatures were needed for certain manufacturing processes. Of course, these older models were not cloaked in beautiful nickel-plated covers or elegant engraving.
