Last week I attended the awards celebration of New England Chapter Institute of Classical Architecture and Art held at the State House in Boston, a fabulous Charles Bulfinch building built in 1798 with later additions. It is sited close to the summit of the south side of Beacon Hill overlooking Boston Common and the Back Bay.

Marble is a calcium-rich stone, porous, has relatively low abrasion resistance,and is susceptible to expansion and contraction. Put carrara in one bath, and Brazilian travertine in another. It’s STONE, people, a natural material, and an incredibly beautiful one at that. LOL I have just renovated some of my place.

Architect: Peter Zumthor complete 1996 One of my favorite buildings is the thermal baths in mountain village of Vals, Switzerland. From those who have experienced the baths, it is said to be a multi-sensory experience as you move through the different rooms constructed from slabs of the local stone quartzite taken from below the site.
