Tile Talk

'Tuesday, January 29, 2013. Tile Mosaics at the Cologne Cathedral. Recently I had the pleasure of traveling to Cologne, Germany as part of BlogTour Cologne and while I was there I visited The Cologne Cathedral. Kölner Dom First I think I should give you a little background on The Dom ( Kölner Dom , also The Cologne Cathedral) as it was started in 1248 and completed in 1880 so the next time your contractor says its going to take a bit longer to finish your project, think of this one.

I ask you what would you rather have inside your shower Wood or concrete?Seems like a no brainer to me.But surprisingly most tile guys are making their inside tile benches out of wood framing only because its easy. But the price of wood is high and wood is greatly effected by water.Concrete blocks on the other hand are very cheap and last forever inside your shower.Cost effective and long lasting. concrete block is the only

Surfaces attendees are optimistic about 2013

CTDA's Tiledealer Blog

'CTDA has been hearing positive reports from the show floor at Surfaces. Steve Cameron, Director of Sales, Northern Area, for MAPEI, reports that “we had some quality customers stop in and discuss with us there early optimism about 2013. So far, two large distributors both said that their year over year January sales were about 30%, better than last January…I would say if that pattern holds true, then 2013 looks to be a much improved year for overall tile and sundry supply sales and good r

The Lace Skirt

The Perfect Bath

'The only word I can think of to describe this delightful interpretation of a sink skirt is “confection” It is both a fanciful and imaginative way to cover the bottom of a marble slab, create some invisible storage and make a design statement. The skirt follows the shape of the top, a lovely detail, and the lace is an inspired choice as a material in this setting.

Faucet Formalities

KB Culture

'There''s a dapper, dressed-up quality to this kitchen faucet that I find—odd though it may seem—reassuring during these raw days of winter. Outside, the landscape is so beat up and rough, and the split finish of the Alta Compact presents such a sleek, resolved design. With the just right amount of color [choices run from white through browns to this Cinder grey] sheathing the chrome, it''s a completed composition. blancoamerica.com.

[Don't] Get a Grippe

KB Culture

'The flu that has settled in NYC this season has made its share of headlines. Last month, while I was attending the LivingKitchen show in Köln, I actually caught some trans-Atlantic coverage of the pandemic: References to ''Flu York'' illustrated with gurney-filled hospital corridors popped up on German and Dutch news outlets. Even though the virus has reportedly peaked, it''s casting a shadow over next week''s Fashion Week festivities.

Winter White

KB Culture

'Leave it to the Dutch to make the most of the limited light that characterizes this time of year. And by using matte surfaces and a cool, neutral palette at that! Even though it''s a design tactic that''s pretty much run its course, I like the coupling of an ornate chandelier with a contemporary space; perhaps because here it''s confined to a bathroom, I''m more tolerant of that particular trick.
