At this point in the photo, the drywall crew is starting the mudding process – covering up joints where sheets of drywall meet one-another, masking the divets where drywall screws are set. Other than the rift cut 6″ wide white oak flooring, the finishes in this room are pretty similar to what you see here.

It is generally a more impactful statement when the entire space, floor to ceiling, is a bold color or a patterned wallpaper. In my home, we have a very small powder room at the bottom of the stairs that is wedged between the wall and a very large chimney. Such a choice means that you fully embrace the idea of going outside the box.

Wall Coverings. Another trend that is growing in popularity is wall coverings. If you don’t want to paint the walls but don’t want to leave them bare, you can try wall coverings. Great ways to go about this are open floor plans and large, two-tier kitchen islands with bar stools.
