I think as an architectural design element it works very well. This offers a warm earthy 3-D texture that simply hasn't been replicated in porcelain or ceramic that I have seen so far. I've experienced more issues with slate and have removed and replaced more slate than any other tile sans Marble, Cultured Marble or Travertine.
