If a wooden floor in your kitchen seems like too much , then maybe consider adding a flagstone floor throughout. Dark wood can seem too imposing for some smaller, dimly lit kitchens, so consider adding painted or bleached white wood instead. 5) Primitive Paint. Primitive paint can add a nice rustic vibe.

There are several types of decorative gravel to choose from, including quartzite and pea pebbles, with colors from gold to gray to black to white. If you are attached to the huge armoire, cabinet or other bulky furnishing that is taking up a lot of space, then consider painting it a warm off-white color— this will help it “disappear” into the room, tricking the eye to think the space is more airy and open. A coat of paint can really go far in a bathroom, as well.

In an area under a large decorative maple (featured in this post ), I planted a shade tolerant ground cover , Vinca. These were 2 x 3 fine-cut flagstones about an inch and eighth thick. A ways back, you heard about one solution I came up for an area of dense shade in this yard. That itself became part of its own post, here.
