Travertine is a Natural Stone as you know, but did you know most of it is filled with grout? If you look at most Travertine Tile you will see that it is very porous on the unfinished side and that is because that is how most of it looks. They simple match the color and fill it with grout then polish the surface.

In all the bathroom showers I have torn out and rebuilt, Slate has been the worst performing material followed closely by Travertine, then Marble of any type. We have to seal it, before grouting to keep the grout from changing the color of the Slate and getting stuck in the rough texture. It takes more work to grout.

There are a number of Natural Stone products you see installed in shower design centers all over made from Marble, Travertine and yes, Slate. My advice and I know a lot of design centers will hate me for this but, "don't do it". Remove all the old grout, re-grout and reseal after cleaning the surface.

I have noticed a lot more Marble and Travertine in showrooms across the metroplex showcasing these two Natural Stones. There are plenty of moldings manufactured to fit almost any corner or design element. The surface of Marble or Travertine in a shower must be treated like your car paint. Prices aren't too bad.
