10-Point Pandemic Kitchen Rating Guide

JG Kitchens

How are you holding up? It’s been a couple of months since so many aspects of our lives changed so suddenly and dramatically. Millions of Americans are working from home now, exercising at home, homeschooling their kids, and doing much more cooking and cleaning than they have in years. Does this sound like your life? Minus the homeschooling, it’s pretty much been my reality since mid-March. As regular Gold Notes readers know, I’m not an enthusiastic cook.

Why You Might Want Porcelain Slab Countertops

JG Kitchens

I first spotted porcelain slab countertops in a European cabinet showroom in West Hollywood, either in 2009 or 2010. I didn’t know what they were, but I loved the sleek look. Fast forward to my first European trade show, LivingKitchen, in January 2011 and I spotted more of them around the show floor. In fact, one manufacturer had a slab set up on a stand and let visitors stand and even jump on it. I did. It didn’t break. I was impressed! I included them in my first and second books.

Sexy Home Design Styles Make a Comeback

I recently returned from the massive Design & Construction Week expo in Las Vegas. Cersaie Impressions – Scavolini Italian Cabinetry

I was very fortunate to be included in the Ceramics of Italy -sponsored press delegation to Cersaie last month. This was my second time touring the Bologna, Italy-based mega-show and it did not disappoint. I will be posting links to my San Diego Union-Tribune favorite tiles and Kitchen & Bath Design News Trend Spotting articles as they publish.

Checking In During COVID-19 Pandemic

JG Kitchens

How are you holding up? This is a particularly stressful time for all of us, and many of our usual outlets are not available when we need them most. For me, it’s hiking and rucking with friends; I look forward to that in the evenings after work – especially with longer daylight hours – and local rules to flatten the COVID-19 curve mean no gatherings and most of our local trails are closed. I can still strap on my ruck and tote bricks up hills and stairs. And I do.

Top Tile Trends from Italy

Last year, I traveled to Italy’s top tile expo, Cersaie, with a press delegation. I didn’t go this year, but that doesn’t mean I can’t share the top trends with you anyway. The folks at Ceramics of Italy and their press representatives have kindly made them available. Here goes. Wood-look tiles continue to impress. Playful.

Why You Might Want a Leak Detector (And Six Plumber Tips for Choosing One)

JG Kitchens

The floor didn’t look quite right. I spotted some warping that hadn’t been there before. I didn’t notice it at first, since it’s in a hallway that leads to a half bathroom, in front of the laundry closet. It’s the kind of space I tend to walk quickly through, or just plunk a laundry basket onto when I’m loading or unloading the washer and dryer. But it caught my attention one morning a couple of months ago and made me go hmmmm.

Guest Post from Natural Stone Institute – Caring for your Natural Stone Surfaces at Home

JG Kitchens

There is no finer artist than Mother Nature. Her gifts of marble, onyx, granite, soapstone and other stones have been justly prized for millennia. You may have one of these surfaces in your home. Marble and granite have long been popular for countertops, shower surrounds and floor tiles. You may have some in your kitchen, bathrooms or entry foyer. Granite countertop. Cersaie Impressions – Flaminia Bathware

JG Kitchens

As I mentioned last week in my Cersaie Impressions – Scavolini post , I used some of my time in Bologna to explore booths we didn’t visit with the Ceramics of Italy press tour. This was one I really enjoyed. In addition to showing almost endless acres of tile, Cersaie also offers a large selection of ceramic sinks, tubs, toilets and other bathware. It was fun seeing what’s trending in Europe. WaterDrop. It also made me wish we used more ceramic shower floors here in the US!

New Year’s Resolutions for your Kitchen

JG Kitchens

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a healthy and happy holiday season. Chances are, your kitchen played a starring role. How did it do? Oscar or Onion? Regardless of how much entertaining you did at home last year, you probably used your kitchen every day, even if it was just to make coffee or nuke your take-out leftovers. Kitchens are central to most of our lives and well-being. Here are some resolutions to make yours better in 2015, even if you don’t plan to remodel it.

Molten Gold – Island Oasis

JG Kitchens

I’m not an avid chef, as I’ve shared before in my In Praise of Slow Cookers post , but I love eating healthfully. One of my strategies for achieving that, regardless of whether I’m using my Crockpot, stovetop or oven, is with herbs and spices. These added elements can turn a blah chicken breast into a Mediterranean treat, for example. That’s why SieMatic ’s granite herb garden feature caught my eye when it landed in my inbox recently. Create a kitchen garden for healthier cooking.

Cersaie Impressions – Villeroy & Boch

JG Kitchens

One of the booths I enjoyed visiting in my last (free) day at Cersaie , Italy’s annual bathware and tile show, was Villeroy & Boch. As their products are widely available in the US, I was somewhat familiar with the brand. Founded in 1748 in Germany as a ceramics company, they might be best known here as a tableware manufacturer. They’re much more, and their booth showed that well.

2016 Tile Style – Spanish Edition

JG Kitchens

Many of the most exciting and innovative styles in tile come from Spain and Italy. In a duet of posts, I’ll be sharing the latest trends from those creative countries. Architectural Digest Show 2017

JG Kitchens

I’ve been wanting to attend the AD Show for awhile now, and finally made it there this year. It’s similar to the Dwell on Design shows I’ve been attending for the past seven years in that it attracts some major brands and smaller artisinal companies. It also includes both industry pros and the general design-loving public. I’ve included some finds I enjoyed seeing there in a new Pinterest Board. There will be more in my upcoming articles. Guest Post – Ryan Fasan on Cevisama and 2015 Tile Trends

JG Kitchens

I had the great pleasure of meeting Ryan Fasan, technical consultant to Tile of Spain and senior partner in Professional Attention to Tile Installations, on a press tour of Cevisama a few years ago. Cevisama, which takes place in Spain every year, is one of the top global markets for porcelain and ceramic tile, and it’s where so many of the trends that end up in showrooms here in the U.S. start. Brick Inspirations

I’ve been thinking a lot about bricks lately. That’s partly because my late mother‘s birthday falls at the end of July, which always reminds me of the Dutch Colonial home she brought us up in. But, mainly, bricks have been on my mind so much this summer because they’ve also been on my back for so many hours and miles!
